Congratulations Sarah!
Our very own sporting hero Sarah Whitchurch was the proud recipient of the Baroness Tanni-Grey-Thompson Trophy for the Disabled Achiever of the Year award at this year’s Guernsey Sporting Achievement Awards.
A keen swimmer and wheelchair racer, it seems there is nothing that Sarah can’t do. Last year she completed two half marathons in her standard wheelchair before she even received her racing chair, completed the Open Castle Swim, took part in the Swimarathon and tried her hand at shot put and javelin. Sarah has also run a duathlon and travelled off-island for triathlon assessments.
The Headway team and some of our members were there to celebrate with Sarah at the ceremony, which was held at Beau Sejour on 16 January. It was also an opportunity to meet British Paralympic athlete Danny Nobbs who has been in Guernsey helping to launch the Sports Commission’s Disability Strategy.
Sarah contracted bacterial meningitis when she was 11 which left her in a wheelchair, but this has not got in the way of her ambitions. With her sights set on a career in Paralympic sports, Sarah is an inspiration and we could not be more proud of her.
Congratulations Sarah! We have a feeling this is just the beginning…
